RADICE-OVIEDO, César Augusto et al. Correlación entre medidas antropométricas, hipertensión arterial y glucosa en ayunas, en una población rural de Paraguay. Rev. Soc. cient. Parag. [online]. 2020, vol.25, n.1, pp.20-31. ISSN 2617-4731.  https://doi.org/10.32480/rscp.2020-25-1.20-31.

Background: Overweight and obesity are important risk factors of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, they impose significant burden on national health-care system. Objective: To evaluate the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with blood pressureand fasting glucose in residents from the Norma Luisa fraction of the municipality of Minga Guazú, Paraguay in 2013. Methods: An cross-sectional study including 280 participants between 18 and 64 years-old, from the Norma Luisa community of the municipality of Minga Guazú, Paraguay between September 2012 and May 2013. Results: In the four categories of BMI and WC, the differences between median values for systolic and diastolic arterial pressure and fasting glucose were statistically significant (p < 0.01). There was a statistically significant correlation between both BMI and WC indicators with systolic blood pressure, diastolic and fasting glucose. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between the BMI and the WC. Conclusions: The results obtained showed that BMI and the WC are predictors of hypertension and increased fasting glucose. These estimators may help to establish predictions of morbidity and mortality, both for clinical purposes and in the design of community intervention programmes to change lifestyle habits in the local population.
