Abstract

FERREIRA, María Isabel  and  SALAS-DUENAS, Danilo Arturo. Strategic value of yerba mate, in the Mbaracayú Forest Biosphere Reserve, Paraguay. Rev. Soc. cient. Parag. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.1, pp.204-217. ISSN 2617-4731.  https://doi.org/10.32480/rscp.2019-24-1.204-217.

The Moisés Bertoni Foundation (FMB) has considered different models it its different interventions in social communities surrounding the Mbaracayu Forest Nature Reserve. In these models reforestation, green corridors and agroforestry systems were incorporated, being always present the yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St-Hil.) seeking to develop a model of landscape restoration in the areas of influence of the Mbaracayu Forest Nature Reserve, Canindeyú, Paraguay. The evolution of interventions over time and the role that yerba mate has in social communities as a socio-economic and cultural element allowing understanding the role of the species for local development are presented emphasizing the ecosystem perspective, where the forest conservation and the generation of economic incomes for farmers can coexist.

Keywords : Local development; Yerba mate; conservation; sustainable production; Canindeyú.
