Abstract

GALLUPPI-SELICH, Tatiana; VILLALBA, Janet; SALAS-DUENAS, Danilo Arturo  and  RODRIGUEZ, Laura. Analysis of the ecosystem function "protection of aquifers by vegetation coverage" in the Mbaracayú Forest Biosphere Reserve (Canindeyú, Paraguay). Rev. Soc. cient. Parag. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.1, pp.99-113. ISSN 2617-4731.  https://doi.org/10.32480/rscp.2019-24-1.99-113.

The protection of aquifers by the vegetation coverage in the Mbacarayú Forest Biosphere Reserve (Canindeyú, Paraguay) and its relationship with the ecosystem services offered by the reserve was analyzed spatially. The study was focused on the variable "aquifer vulnerability" according to the vegetation coverage studied through the ECOSER tool. It is based on the spatial analysis of the functions offered by the different land coverages, to then relate them to the services they offer and thus generate distribution maps. The identified ecosystem services were flood damping, ground and surface water availability, identified by their relationship with the ecosystem function under study. The maps resulting from the research demonstrate the importance of natural coverage in the provision of these services. They emphasize the importance of forests, which offer a greater provision of the ecosystem function under study and of all the identified ecosystem services. This research shows the spatial analysis of an area based on its ecological attributes, which helps in the planning of an area.
