BRITO ALVARADO, Xavier  e  VAYAS CASTRO, Santiago. Geopolitics of football: on the globalization of the ball. Acad. (Asunción) [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.1, pp.103-112. ISSN 2414-8938.  https://doi.org/10.30545/academo.2022.ene-jun.10.

If there is a global sport, it is soccer, there is almost no geographical space that escapes its practice and influence. Promoted by the International Football Federation, players, cultural industries and multinational companies, they have made it one of the most important social phenomena for humanity; not only in sports, but in politics and economics. This article is based on a bibliographic review on football from a geopolitical point of view and its objective is to reflect on how this sport is part of a field of contemporary international social, political and economic disputes. Today soccer is not only a sport, it is a political and economic tool that works like a soft power. The following work is part of a historical journey of football from its beginnings in the 19th century, to the last football World Cup in Russia 2018, which is considered one of the most political in history, and paid particular attention to a geopolitical look at this sport.

Palavras-chave : Football; Geopolitics; Economy; Globalization.
