Abstract

CARMONA BALLESTAS, Roberto José. Reductive materialism and eliminative materialism: two postures in philosophy of mind. Acad. (Asunción) [online]. 2019, vol.6, n.2, pp.164-177. ISSN 2414-8938.  https://doi.org/10.30545/academo.2019.jul-dic.6.

In the twentieth century the philosophy of mind saw its greatest theoretical rise. The different schools of thought postulated theories that gave different answers to the mind-body problem. Each school was girded to specific ontology and an epistemology to find the solution to the problems around the mental. It was materialism the preferred ontology of the contemporary philosophers of mind. Some philosophers with more radical materialistic postures (physicalists) and others with softer postures (anomalous monism, subjective character of experience), were theoretically faced in the arena of philosophical problems. In this paper it will be approved two materialist positions around the philosophy of mind of the 20th century: the reductive materialism (identity theory) and the eliminative materialism.

Keywords : Materialism; ontology; epistemology.
