Abstract

KWAN CHUNG, Chap Kau  and  CARDOZO, Soledad. Situational leadership style predominant in the Micro and Small Companies of Asunción, Paraguay. Acad. (Asunción) [online]. 2018, vol.5, n.2, pp.117-126. ISSN 2414-8938.  https://doi.org/10.30545/academo.2018.jul-dic.4.

The current research deals with the situational leadership theory and its corresponding styles, namely: 'Directing', 'Guiding', 'Participating' and 'Delegating'. The main objective was to identify the type of situational leadership that is predominant in small and microenterprises based in Asuncion, and which have been active in the Paraguayan market for ten years at least. The methodology employed in this research responds to a mixed approach, adjusted to the non-experimental, cross-sectional and explanatory type. The sample frame includes 216 surveyed individuals, according to a previously determined economic status. The sample was non-probabilistic and conveniently taken. The instrument applied in this research was the Questionnaire of Situational Leadership undertaken by Prof. Hernan Bachenheimer. Three starting hypotheses have been formulated, with one of them being 'rejected' and the other two 'failed to reject'. It was hence concluded that the predominant situational leadership style of small and microenterprises based in Asuncion corresponds to the Participating type. Likewise, the variable named 'Kinship' is significant for the surveyed group, either in terms of ownership or family bonds. Finally, a discussion is also offered about the Delegating situational leadership style, as it ends up being not significant compared to the other styles.

Keywords : Situational theory; leadership and leadership styles; microenterprises; Paraguay.
