Abstract

CABALLERO CAMPOS, Herib. Without lawyers and notaries. Difficulties to initiate the Judgment of Residence to the governor Joaquin de Alós in 1796. Acad. (Asunción) [online]. 2017, vol.4, n.2, pp.45-54. ISSN 2414-8938.  https://doi.org/10.30545/academo.2017.jul-dic.7.

This article analyses of the volumes of the Judgment of Residence to the Governor of Paraguay Joaquín de Alós y Brú (1787-1796), which began in 1796, and that for various reasons delayed its start almost a year. One of the main arguments of the residence judge was the lack of notary and attorneys or lawyers who could advise him in the conduct of the process which led to several consultations to the Real Audience of Buenos Aires, aggravating the situation of the trial as the resident Alós had to leave the Province to assume the government of Valparaíso in Chile. In addition, the Cabildo de Asunción questioned the Resident Judge for his close relationship with several of the officers who had to be submitted to the Residencia. This article is one of the first results of the analysis of documentation composed of six volumes that are in the National Archive of Asuncion.
