Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is one of the prototypes of autoimmune diseases, mainly involving the female sex, with a 9:1 female-to-male ratio. It is characterized by the formation of autoantibodies with the participation of adaptive and innate immunity, in interaction with genetic and environmental factors. These autoantibodies are a central part of the pathophysiology of the disease, causing from mild organ involvement to severe multisystem involvement. The diagnosis is clinical, guided by a detailed anamnesis, an exhaustive physical examination and autoimmunity markers; it could eventually be supported by classificatory criteria of some scientific societies. The current review aims to highlight the generalities about the disease, emphasizing its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and its diagnostic and therapeutic approach, serving as a support for comprehensive medical training for the benefit of patients.
