Formative assessment has gained great relevance due to the very nature that it represents, focusing its approach on the achievement of competencies through the collection and assessment of information in a systematic and continuous way during the teaching and learning process for the relevant decision making. The objective of this article is to review the main conceptual contributions and the number of publications related to formative evaluation in relation to the area of physical education between the period of 2017 and the first quarter of 2022. This study has been prepared from the framework of the quantitative approach, retrospective, with a bibliometric design; For this, information was searched in three main databases, SCOPUS, Web of Science (WOS) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) selecting a total of 50 scientific articles referring to formative evaluation related to physical education and related courses, both in basic and higher education, at the national and international level in Spanish and English. General searches were made with the name of the variables and the Boolean operators AND, OR, in order to limit the collection of documents to the subject to be investigated according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, it is mentioned that formative evaluation in relation to the Physical Eduction is an instrument that allows both teachers and students to collect information during the teaching-learning process and then analyze it and make relevant decisions in a timely manner.
