An electrical power system used to supply, transfer and use electrical energy can have different characteristics according to the type of loads connected to it, the main ones being resistive and non-linear loads. In the presence of such loads, circulating reactive power is generated in the system, and in the presence of unbalanced loads, unbalanced currents are seen in the phase, as well as currents in the neutral. In order to overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes the use of an Active Power Filter (APF), using model-based predictive control (MPC). To achieve this, a two-level converter topology is used in combination with a three-phase generation system and contrasting the results obtained with such converters with another multilevel type converter. Results based on a MATLAB/Simulink simulation environment are discussed and the most relevant features of the MPC approach are highlighted.
