This paper aims to study the way in which credit institutions classify loan applications, in particular those of the agricultural sector. The starting point is the standard rating given by a financial institution, part of the normal and generalized credit risk rating process. As an example of the outcomes and conclusions, we have considered the effect of the risk rating of a producer with an agricultural land of approximately 2000 hectares. In general, this aforementioned enterprise has a rating of 69. This rating puts the client in category “C”. The resulting risk rating is below categories A and B, meaning that the client has a higher probability of defaulting than clients that are in categories A and B. The resulting risk rating would, therefore, allow to adjust the treatment given to the loan application of each business or loaner, and this, according to the reviewed theory, would result, in the medium-term and long-term, in having a more profitable client portfolio in accordance with the assumed risks.
