Abstract

BLANCO, C.E.. Research abstracts of education journals from colombia. Rev. ciente. UCSA [online]. 2017, vol.4, n.2, pp.24-34. ISSN 2409-8752.  https://doi.org/10.18004/ucsa/2409-8752/2017.004(02)024-034.

The need to characterize research in any discipline has to do with analyzing published articles in journals. Also, the study of structures and functions of discourse can reveal phenomena that help to understand and act upon various spheres of reality. Abstracts are genres that usually represent articles, education texts are epistemologically relevant and the presentation of results is usually the main indicator of the scientific value of papers. This empirical study using texts was exploratory in nature and its objective was to analyze the structuring of 96 research abstracts from ten education journals from Colombia, the presence of results in the abstracts and their possible relationship with articles. The units of analysis were the abstracts and the categories the rhetorical movements evidenced in them. Results showed that the most common abstracts were those with only an introduction, typical of essays. Well-structured abstracts and also those which provided results were a minority. In only two of the ten journals studied their abstracts evidenced a minimum of three rhetorical structures. These results have suggested an important component of essayist prose typical of historical-philosophical traditions in the texts. Also, the need to work not only on abstract writing but also on research.
