Abstract

The study is a descriptive-correlational research that describes the prevalence of anxiety and depression, and relationship with personality traits in a university population of Gran Asuncion. The sample is composed by 69 students of psychology, selected through a probabilistic technique from the lists of regular students’ period 2011-2016 of Universidad del Cono Sur de las Américas UCSA. The instruments applied were: Zung's Depression Scale (1965), Zung's Anxiety Test (1971) and Gosling's Ten-Item Personality Inventory TIPI (2003). Data analysis and processing applied techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics. Higher than expected values ​​were verified with respect to general population. Anxiety shows 17% depression in 22% in selected sample. About associations, anxiety presents moderate and negative correlation with emotional stability and depression low and negative with responsibility and moderate and negative with emotional stability. The aspect about create programs to include students inside psychotherapeutic processes as an additional requirement to obtain a bachelor's degree is discussed. Finally is showed recommendations to continue research about the characteristics of students of psychology, as an effort to improve the quality of service offered and the advancement of psychological science.
