The purpose of this review article is to explain the importance of communication skills for the reception and production of texts in academia. It is thought to offer an introduction to the concept of academic literacy that emerged a decade ago as a proposal to face the reading and writing problems of university students. The article starts describing the concept of communicative competences and ends showing the contributions of academic literacy, no longer understood asa state thatis reachedonce andfor all, butas a processthat extendsover time.
