Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was announced as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on February 11, 2020. From that moment, challenges have arisen regarding how to optimally support the immune system in the general population, and especially in older adults. There is much evidence that the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections varies widely with age, being generally more severe in the elderly. An optimal immune response depends on proper diet and nutrition to adequately counter the infection. Several studies have shown the importance of vitamin D as a key factor in regulating immune responses. In this review, we analyze the role of vitamin D in the immune response during SARS-CoV-2 infection with special emphasis on older adults.
