Resumen

MINO, Luis Marcelo; TORALES, Judith María; GARCIA, Laura Beatriz  y  CENTURION, Osmar Antonio. Current pharmacological therapeutic management in adult systemic arterial hypertension. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.1, pp.142-155. ISSN 2312-3893.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2021.08.01.142.

Treatment with pharmacological agents for systemic arterial hypertension (HT) produces a significant decrease in cardiovascular complications. Pharmacologic antihypertensive therapy produces a relative risk reduction of nearly 50% in the incidence of heart failure, a relative risk reduction of stroke of up to 40%, and a relative risk reduction of up to 25% in myocardial infarction. The degree of reduction in blood pressure, not the choice of antihypertensive medication, is the main determinant of cardiovascular risk reduction in patients with HT. Combination therapy with drugs of different classes has a blood pressure lowering effect substantially greater than doubling the dose of a single agent. However, the risk of adverse effects, costs, and inconvenience to the patient increase as more antihypertensive medications are added. The objective is to carry out a narrative review on the current pharmacological therapeutic management of hypertension in adults.

Palabras clave : essential hypertension; antihypertensives; adverse effects.
