Resumen

RIERA DOMINGUEZ, María Graciela  y  SANTA CRUZ SEGOVIA, Francisco Vicente. Urinary microbiome or urobiome - A paradigm shift with clinical implications. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.1, pp.137-141. ISSN 2312-3893.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2021.08.01.137.

Classical microbiology relies on direct observation of stains and cultures of microorganisms from clinical samples. The limitations of these techniques imply the overlooking of much of the diversity of the bacterial communities that colonize the human body. The human microbiome project has begun to catalogue the microbial composition of the healthy human body based on 16S rRNA sequencing and new sampling and culturing methods that allow researchers to look beyond the outputs of classical microbiology techniques. Evidence of the presence of microbial communities in the urinary tract was first described less than a decade ago. This marked the end of the “sterile urine” paradigm. Studies have shown that healthy urinary tract is colonized by a unique urinary microbiota, known as the urinary microbiome or urobiome. The objective of this work is to review the new concept of urinary microbiome or urobiome and its clinical implications.

Palabras clave : microbiota; urinary tract infections; urine.
