Abstract

TORALES, Julio; DE DOMENICO MEYER, Enrique  and  DUARTE FARINA, Eliana. Schizophrenia and visual perception disturbances. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2020, vol.7, n.2, pp.96-104. ISSN 2312-3893.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2020.07.02.96.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder with repercussions in multiple areas which profoundly affects the patient's life. Among the altered aspects there is perception and, within it, visual perception. In patients with schizophrenia, it has been determined that an increase in visual perception disturbances (changes in the perception of colors, bodies, faces, movement of objects and double or blurred vision) is associated with an early age of onset, more delusions and hallucinations, strange behavior, depressive symptoms and worse social functioning. In this sense, the objective of this review article was to present an overview on how neurobiological alterations of schizophrenia affect the visual system and what are the implications of the presence of visual perception alterations in these patients.

Keywords : schizophrenia; visual perception; visual disorders; mental disorders.
