[online]. 2019, vol.6, n.2, pp.21-29.  Epub 01-Sep-2019. ISSN 2312-3893.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2019.06.02.21-029.

Introduction:

Taking care of a relative with an illness implies for those who do it, among other complications, to neglect their health in a certain way, isolate or diminish their social activities and increase their workload, as well as suffer certain restrictions, negative economic consequences, changes in the relationship with the patient and sexual problems.

Objectives:

To determine the level of overburden of the caregivers of patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis of the Hospital de Clínicas of the National University of Asunción, Paraguay.

Methodology:

It was an observational, descriptive, and prospective design that included 30 main caregivers of patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis at the Hospital de Clínicas of the National University of Asunción, Paraguay. The overburden of the caregivers was measured through the “Zarit Burden Interview”.

Results:

Thirty main caregivers were included and 73.3% of them were women, 76.7% resided in the Central Department, with ages ranging between 18 and 65 years. In 40% of the cases, these caregivers were first-degree relatives of the patients. Mild overburden was found in 10% of the caregivers.

Conclusions:

Overburden (mild) was observed in caregivers of patients with chronic kidney disease. No statistically significant association was found between the levels of overburden and other variables.

Palabras clave : caregivers; chronic renal insufficiency.
