Introduction:

Liver cirrhosis is one of the main health problems in the world, due to its high morbidity and mortality.

Objectives:

To describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of liver cirrhosis in the Hospital de Clínicas.

Materials and methods:

Observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study. We included 95 patients who consulted in the Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy in the period 2013-2014 and were diagnosed with liver cirrhosis.

Results:

The frequency of liver cirrhosis was 7.8% of the total of consultations in the Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy and 59% of the patients were male. The mean age at the time of the first consultation was 51±14 years. The most frequent etiology was alcohol consumption (51%). The functional Child-Pugh score of these patients was A in 44%, B in 39% and C in 17%. The mean of the MELD score was 13.84±4.75. The main complication was the presence of esophageal varices (82%).

Conclusion:

Liver cirrhosis was more frequent in men, alcohol consumption was the predominant etiology, Child-Pugh score A predominated and esophageal varices were the main complication.
