BENITEZ GONZALEZ, Verónica. Occult renal disease in adults with arterial hypertension. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2018, vol.5, n.1, pp.36-41.  Epub 01-Mar-2018. ISSN 2312-3893.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2018.05(01)36-041.

Introduction:

Occult renal disease is an entity that defines the most initial stages of renal failure and is not detected with the methods usually used (serum creatinine).

Methodology:

A prospective, observational, descriptive study conducted in adults with arterial hypertension who attended the Hospital Nacional (Itauguá, Paraguay) in 2017. In addition to the anthropometric measurements, 24-hour proteinuria and creatinine clearance measured by the Cockcroft-Gault formula were determined.

Results:

Ninety patients were included, with a mean age of 50 years, 51% females. Eight percent of occult renal disease was detected with the Cockcroft-Gault formula and 21% with 24-h proteinuria.

Conclusion:

Eight percent of controlled and uncontrolled hypertensive patients are underdiagnosed in terms of moderate renal dysfunction, taking into account the Cockcroft-Gault formula and 21% according to 24-h proteinuria.
