Introduction: obesity is currently a public health problem worldwide. It has become a determining factor in the appearance of numerous diseases, increasing the morbi-mortality rates of the adult population. However, there are many studies that indicate that it starts in early ages. Youth is a critical stage to promote health and generate life styles. Because of this, it is necessary to identify the young people with this problem in order to initiate the corrective measures that could avoid the development of complications. Objective: to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in students of the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Itapúa. Material and methods: prospective, descriptive and observational design carried out in students of the Faculty of Medicine from 2011 to 2013. Results: out of 165 students, 61.8% had normal weight and 38.2% overweight or obesity. Concerning family history, blood hypertension and obesity were present in the 58.7% and 47.6% respectively. The remarkable clinical feature of the cardiovascular exam was the finding of a blood pressure of > 130/85 in 22.2% of the students. Conclusions: the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 38.2%.
