Introduction:

The management of orofacial pain is relevant, due to its impact on the quality of life of those who suffer it. It usually has its origin in endoperiodontic lesions; however other causes must be considered to establish an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment.

Objective:

To determine the frequency of orofacial pain, were measured the presence or absence of pain in regions of teeth, mouth and tongue, face and cheek, temporomandibular joint and anterior area of the ear.

Materials and Methods:

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a population of 35 years and older, in Asunción and the metropolitan area in 2018. The sample consisted in 189 participants who were selected through a convenience non-probabilistic sampling; the data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. They were evaluated according to their demographic characteristics, prevalence and location of pain and other associated factors.

Results:

The frequency of orofacial pain was 40.2 %, with the most common types being chewing or biting pain followed by pain caused by blisters, sores or ulcers on the lips or mouth.

Conclusion:

The study revealed a high frequency of orofacial pain, with dentoalveolar pain being most frequent.
