Abstract

MELGAREJO TOUCHET, Nancy Lorena. Colistin Resistance in Enterobacterales. Rev. salud publica Parag. [online]. 2022, vol.12, n.2, pp.48-61. ISSN 2307-3349.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rspp.diciembre.48.

Antimicrobial resistance currently represents one of the main public health problems worldwide.

In our country, most nosocomial infections are caused by germs resistant to multiple antimicrobials. This situation has meant that in recent years colistin has been used for their treatment, the use of which has been limited for many years due to its toxicity.

This review aims to describe the mechanisms of action, resistance mechanisms and methodologies used for the evaluation of colistin sensitivity in Enterobacterales.

The methodology used consisted of the bibliographic review of publications in indexed journals and the compilation of recommendations from reference laboratory guides.

The indiscriminate use and the consequent increase in resistance, brings with it the constant challenge to Microbiology laboratories for the development of recommended methodologies for evaluating colistin sensitivity.
