Objective:

patients undergoing cephalic duodenopancreatectomy at the Hospital Nacional de Itauguá in the period between January 2017 and July 2019.

Materials and methods:

A descriptive and retrospective observational cross-sectional study studying patients undergoing cephalic pancreaticoduodenectomy at the Hospital Nacional de Itauguá.

Results:

Of 27 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy, 52% were female and the mean age was 63.7 years. The most frequent reason for consultation was jaundice with 67%. From the pathological point of view, the most frequent tumor was pancreatic adenocarcinoma with 44% followed by adenocarcinoma of Vater's ampulla with 37%. In most patients the bilirubin level was less than 10 mg/dl. Regarding morbidity, the most frequent complication was fistula in 50%, followed by infection at the surgical site in 20% and mortality was 19% (5 patients).

Conclusion:

The mean age was between 67 and 77 years. The most frequent pathological type was adenocarcinoma of the pancreas followed by adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, most of the patients had bilirubin level less than 10 mg/dl. Half of the patients develop pancreatic fistula, and approximately 1 in 5 patients died.
