Abstract

A descriptive retrospective observational cross-sectional study was carried out in 195 operated patients to determine the benefits of videolaparoscopic appendectomy versus the conventional technique during the period from February 2017 to August 2019 in the Surgery Service of the Central Military Hospital, where data were collected from patient files regarding sex, age, provenance, surgical approach and hospital stay, surgical time and complications. In general, 68 of the patients studied were female, corresponding to 34.87%, and 127 were male, corresponding to 65.12%. The average age of the patients was 30 ± 14.10 years in In general, the highest percentage of surgeries was performed with the conventional technique 72.31% and the videolaparoscopic 27.69%, the hospital stay was shorter in the videolaparoscopic appendectomy than the conventional one. The videolaparoscopic method required a longer surgical time, whereas the conventional method presented a higher percentage of post-operative complications with a predominance of wall abscesses and seromas. Regarding the origin of the patients, in general, 34.35% were from Asunción, 47.17% from the Central Department and 18.46% from the interior of the country.
