To determine the prevalence of esophageal cancer according to its location, clinical, pathological characterization and surgical treatment in the general surgery service of the IPS central hospital during the period from January 2016 to December 2018.

Material and methods:

Descriptive, retrospective study by reviewing 37 clinical records of patients who came to the emergency department of the IPS Central Hospital and as scheduled surgery with the diagnosis of esophageal cancer in those who were surgically operated, during the period of January 2016 and December of 2018.


37 patients with the diagnosis of esophageal cancer were included. The male sex prevailed in 86.48% (n: 32). The average age is 72 years. The predominant reason for consultation was dysphagia. It was found a predominance towards middle esophageal cancer in 40.54%. Gastrostomy was mostly performed for feeding. Grade III squamous carcinoma predominated in 40.55%.


The majority of patients with esophageal cancer are between 71 and 80 years old. Squamous carcinoma predominates over adenocarcinoma. Dysphagia was a common symptom in all patients.
