Objective:

To describe the frequency of post-thyroidectomy bleeding in general surgery department (Sala X - Clínicas Hospital - FCM - UNA).

Patients and Methods:

Observational, retrospective study that included patients who underwent thyroidectomy Sala X General Surgery Department of the Clínicas Hospital between January 2016 and December 2018.

Results:

124 patients studied, bleeding was found in 7 patient immediately after surgery (5.64%), 109 women (87.9%) and 15 men (12.1%) between 20 and 76 years (average 45.15 years). Pathology report: 18 (14.5%) Papillary thyroid cancer; 1 (0.8%) diffuse goiter; 10 (8.06%) nodular goiter; 77 (62.09%) multinodular goiter; 9 (7.26%) toxic diffuse goiter; 1 (0.8%) factitious thyrotoxicosis; 1 (0.8%) thyrotoxicosis; 2 (1.61%) nonspecific thyrotoxicosis; 2 (1.61%) Hashimoto's thyroiditis; 3 (2.4%) congenital anomaly, 5 of the patients that had bleeding after surgery underwent a total thyroidectomy (TT) and 2 after subtotal thyroidectomy (STT).

Conclusion:

The number of patients undergoing thyroidectomy who presented bleeding immediately after surgery is higher than international papers presents, which may be the cause of the limited use of advanced hemostasis equipment which helps to control this kind of complications.
