Abstract

Introduction:

Colorectal cancer is the most common malignant neoplasmof the digestive tract. More than 95% corresponds to adenocarcinoma. The incidence is similar in men and women. Adenocarcinoma of the right colon predominates over the left.

Objective:

Determining the prevalence of colon cancer according to its location and surgical treatment in the general surgery service of the Paraguayan Social Prevision Institute IPS, central hospital from January 2017 to December 2018.

Material and methods:

Descriptive and retrospective study by review of 264 surgical files. Age, sex, histological type and surgical procedure were determined.

Results:

Of the 264 sample patients, 127 underwent surgery for tumors of the right colon (51.89%), 96 patients with tumors of the left colon (36.36%), 23 patients with tumors of the transverse colon (8.71%), and 18 patients with tumors of the rectosigmoid junction, corresponding to (18%). The most frequent age range observed was 61 to 70 years.

Conclusion:

Colon cancer was found more frequently in males by 51.13%. The predominant age range was 61 to 70 years. Adenocarcinoma grade I to II was the most frequent. The surgical procedures varied according to the location, the surgical emergency and the patient's morbidity.
