Introduction:

Gastric cancer is the second most prevalent malignant pathology of the digestive tract worldwide and one of the five most frequent causes of death due to malignant pathologies. Patients with gastric cancer are subjected with curative intent to partial or total resections of the stomach with lymphadenectomy, this surgery being highly complex and with high morbidity and mortality in the immediate postoperative period, and a long-term survival variable depending on the clinical stage.

Objective:

To determine the survival and quality of life of patients operated on for gastric cancer with curative intent, in the Central Hospital of the Social Prevision Institute from January 2012 to December 2016.

Methodology:

Observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional.

Results:

Total gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy DII was performed in 81.4% of the operated patients. A predominance of males was registered in 72% with an average age of 56.5 +/- 2 years. In 27% of the cases there were complications in the immediate postoperative period and mortality was 17.1%. The most frequent clinical stage of the disease was 3b in 35.1% of the cases. After the evaluation of the quality of life by ECOG, the 0 score was registered with greater frequency in 53.8% of the sample.

Conclusion:

Survival of patients with gastric cancer operated on by total gastrectomy increases in early stages of the disease as well as their quality of life.
