Introduction:

Mediastinoscopy is a surgical technique that allows minimally invasive access to the mediastinum. Currently, mediastinoscopy continues to be a surgical procedure of enormous value, especially in the staging of bronchogenic carcinoma. The objective of this work is to show the experience of this surgical team with this surgical modality.

Materials and Methods:

Observational, descriptive, retrospective cross-sectional study. All the patients who underwent surgery by the same surgical team were included in the period from June 2013 to October 2018. The demographic characteristics of the series, main histological types and morbidity and mortality of the series are described.

Results:

37 patients were operated on during this period of time. (25 women), between 17 and 82 years old (average 54 years). The most frequent histological types were Sarcoidosis (10 cases), lung cancer (8 cases), lymph node metastasis (4 cases) and Hodking lymphoma and tuberculosis (3 cases).

Conclusions:

Mediastinoscopy was performed more frequently in women in this series. If we take into account the 2 most frequent pathologies found (sarcoidosis and lung cancer), the first occurs in women between 30 - 40 years, and the second, in men over 50 years. There was no morbidity and mortality associated with the procedure.
