ABSTRACT Introduction: Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare neoplasms (900 cases reported) that originate from submesothelial connective tissue. There are few symptoms and can reach large dimensions. The aim of this work is to present our experience in the management of these tumors. In this retrospective study included all patients with confirmed diagnosis of pleural solitary fibrous tumor between January 2008 and December 2010. Results: Two women aged 45 to 50 years without previous pathologies, have back pain in left hemi thorax. Chest computed tomography showed tumors of 20 cm and 4 cm in diameter. The pre-operative percutaneous biopsies could not rule out malignancy. The other case (male, 62 years) who had undergone surgery for thymoma and thyroid cancer had a tumor to-left cardiac 6 cm in diameter. All cases underwent surgery, making videoassisted tumor resection in tumors of smaller diameter and by thoracotomy in the most voluminous tumor. The immunohistochemical profile showed positivity for vimentin and CD34 and negative for cytokeratin. There was no morbidity and postoperative mortality were discharged between the third and seventh post-operative day. Discussion and Conclusion: These tumors are rare, few symptomatic and may be discovered incidentally during a chest radiograph control. The definitive treatment is surgical excision, which can be performed by thoracotomy or VATS, depending on the size of the tumor with good results.
