Abstract

REINOSO¹, Patricia Diana et al. Quantitative determination of the color in lawns of native species of Paspalum . Investig. Agrar. [online]. 2014, vol.16, n.1, pp.49-55. ISSN 2305-0683.

The traditional method for evaluating color of the lawn uses a visual classification system established by the judgment of the observer that it is a subjective assessment, then the analysis of spectral reflectance has been introduced as an alternative fast, reliable and nondestructive tool. The NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) provides an unbiased estimate of the quality of the turfgrass and could potentially replace the evaluation method based on visual skills. In this work, the color of six native species and an improved Paspalum was characterized using a color meter. It measures the light reflected by turfgrass in the red (660 nm) and near infrared (855 nm) spectral bands. An experimental design of eight randomized complete block was used, with evaluations from August 2012 to February 2013, descriptive and comparative statistical tests were done as well. The registered data characterized all assessed species as medium green colors. The color index values for improved P. vaginatum are similar to those reported by the NTEP for different varieties of the same species evaluated in the United States in a qualitative way. This may suggests native species of turfgrasses were properly characterized by the color meter.
