Abstract

VAN HUMBEECK ACUNA, Marco Andrés  and  OVIEDO DE CRISTALDO², Rosa María. Plant population and thier effect on the vegetative development and yield of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) variety Escoba. Investig. Agrar. [online]. 2012, vol.14, n.1, pp.25-30. ISSN 2305-0683.

The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Field of the Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias of the Universidad de Asunción, in San Lorenzo city. The objective was to evaluate population densities and observe their effect on the development and yield of the Escoba variaty of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). Treatments were as follows: (T1) 50.000; (T2) 60.000; (T3) 70.000; (T4) 80.000; (T5) 90.000 and (T6) 100.000 plants for hectare. The experimental design was complete randomized blocks with six treatments and four replications. The evaluated variables were: plant height, branches height, stem diameter, root length, number of branches per plant, number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsules, weight of 1000 seeds and yield. The comparison of average data was carried out by Tukey Test (α 0,05), plus a correlation analysis. When plant population increases the number of branches and capsules in each plant decreases, as well as the stem diameter. The branches height increases when plant population is larger. The results show that there are not significant differences for yield among the population of plants compared. Between 50.000 and 100.000 plants for hectare the yields are statistically the same. The yield is compensated by the number of branches and capsules in each plant in the smaller populations and by the number of plants for area unit in the larger populations.
