Abstract

TRINIDAD CABALLERO, Víctor Luis  and  GAONA MENA, Edgar Francisco. Insecticide and repellent action of Neem on adults of Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) in grains of beans (Vigna unguiculata). Investig. Agrar. [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.2, pp.107-111. ISSN 2305-0683.

The study aimed to evaluate the repellent and insecticide effect of neem dust (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) at different concentrations on Callosobruchus maculatus F. infesting pyta'i beans (Vigna unguiculata) in storage. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Entomology of the Department of plant protection of the Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias, Universidad Nacional de Asunción, located on the campus of the City of San Lorenzo, with 70±10% relative humidity and 25±1 °C., between February and March 2011. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 5 treatments and 10 replications, where treatment 1 was the absolute control and treatments 2, 3, 4 and 5 corresponded to the doses of Neem powder of 1, 2, 3 and 4 % (powder weight / grain weight), respectively. Each experimental unit was represented by the dose of powder used, 10 adult insects (5 males and 5 females) and 20 grams of beans. The variables evaluated were mortality and repellency of insects at different doses. For the evaluation of mortality observations were made every 24 hours for a period of 5 days, while for the repellency study the results of each dose was observed at 24 hours after the experiment was set up. The powder of Neem (Azadirachta indica) has no effect on mortality of Callosobruchus maculatus F. in any of the proposed levels. The dose of 4%  Neem powder had repellent effects on Callosobruchus maculatus in stored bean seeds.

Keywords : Callosobruchus maculatus; Azadirachta indica; alternative control.
