Abstract

ZARATE GABRIAGUEZ, Carmen Leticia; OVIEDO DE CRISTALDO, Rosa María  and  GONZALEZ ESPINOLA, Diego Dionisio. Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) crop yield, Mbarete variety, in different planting times and plant populations. Investig. Agrar. [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.2, pp.67-74. ISSN 2305-0683.

The trial was conducted at the experimental field of the Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, San Lorenzo city. The objective was to evaluate different planting dates and plant populations of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), variety Mbarete. The experimental design was split plots in four complete randomized blocks with two planting date (november and december) and three plant populations (60,000; 100,000 and 120,000 plants per hectare). The evaluated variables were: plant height, days to flowering, effective branches length with capsules, number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule, thousand seeds weight and crop yield. Data were analyzed for variance, Duncan test, regression and correlation. Planting in november resulted in longer vegetative cycle, taller plants, more capsules per plant and higher crop yield; while planting in mid-december resulted in significant reductions of the before mentioned variables, which indicates sensitivity to photoperiod. Positive correlation between crop yield and number of capsules per plant and number of seeds per capsule were observed; however, these were negatively correlated with thousand seeds weight.  Best crop yields 1.207,5 and 1.192,5 kg ha-1 were observed in populations of 60.000 and 100.000 plants per hectare when planted in november. Late planting date reduce significantly the crop cycle, plant height and crop yield, reaching the last one values of 302,33 kg ha-1.

Keywords : Sesame; yields; planting date; plant populations.
