Abstract

Many fungi species are disseminated by seeds and forage species are not an exception. An experiment was conducted during February and March 2011, with the objective to assess the incidence of fungal pathogens on seeds of major tropical forage species used in Paraguay and the percentage of germination of seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 9 treatments consisting of grass species: Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú, Brachiaria brizantha cv. Toledo, Brachiaria humidicola cv. Humidicola, Brachiaria dictyoneura cv. Llanero, Brachiaria ruziziensis, Panicum maximum cv. Mombasa, Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania, Panicum maximum cv. Gatton panic, y Chloris gayana, and 8 reps for 2 culture methods (Blotter test and PDA). There were seeded 50 seeds per Petri dish, totalizing 400 seeds per treatment and culture method. Incubation of the seeds was for seven days and the evaluation was made through the identification and quantification of fungal pathogens. For germination in the laboratory, 400 seeds of each lot were used, and for the evaluation of germination the radicles of seeds were quantified. The fungi identified in the different samples of seeds were: Drechslera sp., Rhizopus stolonifer, Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Alternaria sp., Fusarium sp., Cladosporium sp. and Aspergillus niger. A higher percentage of infected seeds in Brachiaria compared with Chloris gayana and Panicum. Brachiaria ruziziensis species have the highest percentage of germination and lower germination percentage is Brachiaria humidicola.
