Abstract

MARTINEZ MORENO, José Martín; AYALA AGUILERA, Líder  and  AYALA BENITEZ, Marcela. Effect of the desiccants Paraquat and Glufosinate ammonium in the yield and physical and physiological quality of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) seeds. Investig. Agrar. [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.1, pp.33-40. ISSN 2305-0683.

The use of pre-harvest desiccant in soybean is being a common practice in the production process. An experiment was installed in Guajaivi, Department of San Pedro, from December 2010 to April 2011, in order to evaluate the effect of glufosinate-ammonium and paraquat desiccants on the yield and physical and physiological quality of soybean seeds variety Don Mario 7.0 i. The experimental design was completely randomized with 3 treatments, Paraquat with a dose of 2 L/ha, glufosinate ammonium 15% at the rate of 2 L/ha and a check without application, with five replicates. The evaluated variables were yield, percentage of germination, vigor, thousand-seed weight, proof of viability by tetrazolium and germination and vigor by the accelerated aging test; variables were subjected to analysis of variance and mean comparison by Tukey at 5% error probability. No statistical significant differences were detected in grain yield, thousand-seed weight and viability. Significant statistical differences were found in vigor, germination and accelerated aging, being the seeds treated with glufosinate-ammonium the group with more vigor and germination then the check and the seeds treated with paraquat. It is concluded that the herbicides glufosinate ammonium and paraquat propitiate a shortening of harvest time, without affecting grain yield. The use of glufosinate ammonium leads to less loss of quality in the germination and vigor of seeds in comparison to paraquat, due to the mechanism of action of the herbicide.

Keywords : Soybean; vigor; germination; viability.
