Abstract

ETER, Leandro El. Permanence of democratic systems in the member states of MERCOSUR and the EUROPEAN UNION as a condition for being part of regional integration. Rev. secr. Trib. perm. revis. [online]. 2020, vol.8, n.16, pp.44-60. ISSN 2304-7887.  https://doi.org/10.16890/rstpr.a8.n16.p44.

Both MERCOSUR and the European Union require their member states to have democratic systems in their internal rights. This practice is a condition for adhering to the American and European integration processes. The same is true of other processes such as the Community of Caribbean States (CARICOM) or the Organization of American States (OAS). However, there are organizations such as the League of Arab Countries that do not meet this requirement, which shows that this requirement is not extended to all regions. The United Nations (UN) and international treaties regulate the protection of human rights and democracy as a form of government. Said legal influence was taken by the majority of the States and there is a kind of universal conscience added to an ethical and moral conviction.

Keywords : MERCOSUR; European Union; values; democracy.
