Resumen

SANTOS, Milton. Distinction and cultural omnivorism: cultural consumption habits among Argentines. Rev. Int. Investig. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.2, pp.235-252. ISSN 2226-4000.  https://doi.org/10.18004/riics.2023.diciembre.235.

The article aims to analyze the consumption habits of cultural products among Argentines from Buenos Aires, between 2014-2016, since the conceptual references of cultural distinction (BOURDIEU, 1998b) and cultural omnivorism (PETERSON, 1972). To this end, the article locates the discussion of consumption within the Sociology of Consumption (Bourdieu, Bauman and Alonso) which proposes an expansion of the concept beyond the neoclassical economic tradition. Based on the theoretical framework, data on consumption of three cultural products are presented: consumption of reading books and magazines, attending cultural events and watching TV. The article concludes that, although a deeper and more consistent analysis of the concepts presented is not possible, the data, variables and categories presented allow us to suppose that the distinctions and cultural omnivorism can be verified and that the treatment and analysis of sociographic data are complex tasks requiring a wide and diverse conceptual and methodological contribution.

Palabras clave : consumption; distinction; cultural omnivorism; social class; stratification.
