This paper presents the methodology, results and conclusions obtained from the implementation of an active methodology to promote critical thinking within an engineering course in higher education. The main goal has been to develop in students soft competences related to collaborative work and critical thinking through cross-checking in the context of a disciplinary course. To this end, a didactic unit has been designed, implemented and evaluated, which has made it possible to systematize the student progress. The main findings indicate that this work makes it possible 1) to improve the acquisition of contents and 2) to contribute to the development of soft skills related to collaborative work and critical thinking. Furthermore, it favors the standardization of teaching, contributing to quality assurance.
