This article aims to emphasize the importance that memorization plays in the teaching-learning process, highlighting the characteristics that make it relevant and generating a dissimilarity with retention. It is also determined that memorization will develop by means of continuous review a knowledge foundation, that will be instituted as a cognitive bridge directly linked to the development of understanding, so that finally, the need to realize that retention, memorization and understanding are the cognitive triad that will enhance the teaching-learning process.
