Abstract

ALBALA-GENOL, Miguel Ángel; MALDONADO-RICO, Antonio F.; ETCHEZAHAR, Edgardo  and  UNGARETTI, Joaquín. Citizenship and sociopolitical participation of future teachers in Madrid (Spain). Rev. Int. Investig. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2019, vol.15, n.2, pp.219-239. ISSN 2226-4000.  https://doi.org/10.18004/riics.2019.diciembre.219-239.

The notion of citizenship has changed since its origins to the present, moving forward toward societies that are less participatory in socio-political issues but that are more inclusive. Likewise, citizenship conceptions are directly related to the most frequent sociopolitical participation of future teachers. The main aim of the study was to investigate how citizenship dimensions are related with different sociopolitical participation forms of the 220 teacher degree students of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of the Autonomous University of Madrid. The main results show that the aspects that the students consider most necessary to form a good citizenship are related with the democratic process that should be followed and the altruism towards people in a bad situation. Regarding the most frequent forms of participation are not related to direct contact with political representatives or platforms. The discussion focuses on whether the main forms of citizen participation have changed significantly in recent decades. In addition, the role that the conception of citizenship might play in socio-political participation is highlighted.
