ETCHEGARAY PEZO, Paulo; PASCUAL HOYUELOS, Gema y CALDERON AEDO, Olga. Teaching of generic competences in general training courses of a Chilean university: The vision of students and teachers. Rev. Int. Investig. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2018, vol.14, n.1, pp.77-88. ISSN 2226-4000. https://doi.org/10.18004/riics.2018.julio.077-088.
The objective of this study is to recognize the view of students and professors of general undergraduate courses offered by a Chilean university. These are based on the teaching of generic competences. The research methodology was qualitative. The participants were 30 students of different undergraduate programs, which had been involved in general courses based on generic competences in this institution. Additionally, 10 professors of these courses participated as research subjects. As instrument for data collection, a written questionnaire regarding perceptions related to the teaching of generic competences was utilized, which was designed by the researchers. The collected data were processed by using the qualitative analysis software ATLAS.ti. The results indicate that the actions performed by both students and professors could facilitate or hinder the teaching and learning of generic competences. Therefore, it is recommended that higher education institutions train professors and university administrators/program coordinators to teach learners how to mobilize/apply their different types of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. This can be done by helping learners solve a variety of problems related to their future work contexts.
