Abstract

ORTIZ, Luis. Forms and extensions of school inequality. About the Paraguayan education system. Rev. Int. Investig. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2014, vol.10, n.1, pp.45-59. ISSN 2226-4000.

The expansion of access to education and the increase in the average duration of schooling were imposed, in the two decades that followed authoritarian regime, as objectives that would give to the educational institution and his titles influence decisive over the social destinations. This issue gave importance to the educational system under the challenge of legitimacy in a society marked by social inequality. The egalitarian ideal challenged education in the construction of the social gaps or its reproduction. The social selection of the education system is maintained despite the expansion of access and the average school extension, since while barriers to access fell, barriers to retention continue. But above all, the social selection is associated with opportunities in the working world, whose scarce jobs -given the backwardness of the Paraguayan economy- impose the distinctions between titles valued and devalued, therefore, the persistence of social inequality through the educational inequality.

Keywords : Educational system; educational inequality; social selection; opportunities; merit.
