Abstract: This essay does not pretend to exhaust the epistemological proposal of Norbert Elias. It points to a need to approach several of its facets, which allows the reader to delve into various concepts, which will lead to different ways of addressing the problems of historical, sociological or anthropological. Elias's proposal aims to reassess the cognitive structures that have so far prevailed in science, and give new life to the approaches of the society of the past or present. The first section contains an overview of the context of thinking of the work of this author, concerns and a tour of some of his empirical work. The second part is devoted to the craft of social science researcher and the exercise of involvement and detachment. Then, a short analysis of contrast with respect to the proposed Elias and methodology of participant observation. To conclude, the relationship between engagement and detachment in "Las Meninas" by Diego Velazquez.
