Resumen

Abstract: The term dropout refers to the abandonment of the career before its conclusion. There are several factors that can lead students to dropout, and it is important to know which the most influential ones are. The objective is: to determine the factors that characterize first year university students who quit in Social Work and English Language (2011), according to the quitters’, principals’ points of view. The methodology is based on a non-experimental design; type of study: descriptive, and crosscutting. The approach is mixed. The survey population: 37 dropouts. The personal features which characterize first year quitters are: single, no children, from urban area. They work and pay their own fees or scholarships. Have a hard time studying and meeting the schedule. Remain in college one semester, do not study daily, sometimes have the ability to adapt easily to the level. Have good relationships with coordinators, teachers and peers. Institutional factors that characterize desertions are: dropouts have received information about the career, services, and the university’s requirements. Academically speaking, teachers manage teaching methods, resources, and the evaluating system. The university does not provide: career counseling, academic leveling for students with low performance, college retention strategies for dropout prevention.
