ABSTRACT. With the objective to determinate animal welfare in draft horses in the city of Concepción, 29 draft horses were sampled without distinction of race or sex, from 2 years of age. The determination of the welfare of the draft horse was carried out by direct indicators obtained from the animal (body condition, behavior, presence of visible lesions) through visual exploration and indirect ones based on the owner (feeding practices, ironwork, sanitary management, infrastructure and housing/job time) through a questionnaire. The results were: 76% (22/29) of the horses had a good body condition, 21% (6/29) regular and 3% (1/29) bad; 93% (27/29) were without injuries and 7% (2/29) with injuries; 100% (29/29) did not show behavioral alterations; 100% (29/29) found themselves with inadequate feeding management; 100% (29/29) were found with proper handling of the horseshoes; 86% (25/29) received inadequate sanitary management and 14% (4/29) adequate; 100% (29/29) of the infrastructure destined for equines were inadequate; 69% (20/29) of housing and work time were adequate and 31% (9/29) inadequate. Thus, 100% (29/29) of the horses under study had at least one indicator inadequately. There is inadequate ownership of equines, which affects their welfare.
