Abstract

LOPEZ, M.B; MALDONADO, R  and  BRITEZ, A. ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR EXTRACTION OF AN OSTEOCONDRAL FRAGMENT IN A QUARTER HORSE MARE - CASE REPORT. Compend. cienc. vet [online]. 2017, vol.7, n.2, pp.34-41. ISSN 2226-1761.  https://doi.org/10.18004/compend.cienc.vet.2017.07.02.34-41.

The osteochondral fragments located in the carpus represent one of the most common pathologies in racehorses, this is due to the repetitive physical effort to which they are subjected during training and mainly to the hyperextensions that derives in a mechanical stress of the bones and ligaments that compose this joint. The purpose of this study is to report a surgical treatment by arthroscopic extraction of an osteochondral fragment at the level of the dorsoproximal border of the third carpal bone in a quarter horse, female, three years old, with a history of decreased performance in addition to lameness with decrease of the cranial phase of the stride and thickening of the articular capsule of the intercarpal joint of the right anterior limb at palpation. No complication was observed with the established treatment, providing a significant improvement in clinical lameness and short rehabilitation period. Currently, the animal is in a training program.

Keywords : arthroscopic surgery; equine; third carpal bone.
