PAOLA, S et al. CORRELATION OF THE MORPHOMETRIC CHANGES IN KIDNEY AND BONE MARROW IN DOGS NATURALLY INFECTED WITH Leishmania sp. Compend. cienc. vet [online]. 2016, vol.6, n.1, pp.11-16. ISSN 2226-1761.  https://doi.org/10.18004/compend.cienc.vet.2016.06.01.11-16.

ABSTRACT. Mesangioproliferative or membranoproliferativa glomerulonephritis; as the changes in bone marrow, which contributes to the development of severe anemia associated with thrombocytopenia are observed in animals with leishmaniasis canine visceral (LCV). The aim was to determine the relation between morphometric macroscopic and microscopic changes of kidney and bone marrow (BM) with the number of amastigotes of Leishmania sp in BM. Forty-seven dogs of different ages and sexes, naturally infected with Leishmania sp were evaluated and grouped according to the number of Leishmania sp/mm2 in BM: low load, moderately low load, moderately high load and high load. Macroscopic morphometric parameters were measured in kidney: length, width and thickness; microscopic parametrec: number of glomeruli in kidney/mm2, diameter of glomeruli in cortex, Bowman capsule thickness and percentage of stroma; and in bone marrow: the percentage of hematopoietic tissue and stroma. A significant difference was observed between the groups according to the number of amastigotes of Leishmania sp/mm2 BM (p=0.0002). No relationship between the macro and microscopic morphometric parameters kidney and BM with parasite load (R2=0.06). These results suggest a wide magnitude of macro and microscopic lesions in kidney and BM in dogs with LVC are an independent of the number of Leishmania sp/mm2 BM.
